Lane Scholars Program for fine Arts

The Lane Scholars Program provides competitive scholarships annually to talented and academically outstanding first-year applicants for admission whose intended major is in the area of Fine Arts. Each scholarship recipient receives an annual award, which replaces any previously awarded institutional scholarships. Recipients will be required to live on campus. This program is in memory of Linda H. Lane, a former associate professor of music at Wesleyan, who was a friend, leader, and benefactor to the college.

ART REQUIREMENTS & EXPECTATIONS

Portfolio Requirements

1. 10-15 works of art, ideally representing a mix of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional media.

  • Work should be original and not copied from other artists, photographs, or magazines.
  • One work should be a current self-portrait drawn from life, not a photograph.

2. Written recommendation from an art teacher.

Tips

1. Present your best works rather than a wide variety of media. The work will be evaluated on your understanding of the creative process, handling of the medium, drawing and design skills, creativity and presentation.

2. Practice talking about your artwork.

  • Are all of the pieces class assignments, or are any of them personal projects?
  • Which is your strongest piece, and why?
  • Which is your weakest piece, and why?
  • How do the pieces in your portfolio relate to your personal and professional goals relative to art making?

3. The portfolio review lasts approximately twenty minutes and includes an interview with members of the Art Department faculty. You are encouraged to ask any questions you may have about the program at that time.

If you have any questions or need clarification about the studio art portfolio, please contact the Office of Admission.

Music should be performed from memory.

Instrumental Auditions

The student should prepare two solo selections to successfully demonstrate your musical abilities and talents.
