Yurie Hayashi

Assistant Professor of Art

B.A. (International Studies) Osaka Gakuin University, 2014; B.F.A. (Painting minored in Art History and Jewelry/Metal Making) Edinboro University, 2018; M.F.A. (Painting) University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, 2022.

As a non-native English speaker, Hayashi notices all the different expressions related to human bodies through different cultures. She creates and uses maquettes as standins for the human bodies; striping away the outside parts of the body, how we present, how we are categorized, or how we identify ourselves. Hayashi is always struck by the many perceptions of human existence. By observing and carefully analyzing the maquette for a long period of time, she finally understands what her model means and just how her emotions relate to the piece.
