Georgia's six-week ban on abortions and what that means.

Am I still able to get an abortion?

Yes, you can get an abortion in Georgia up to six weeks after conception. Currently, Georgia has a six-week abortion ban that prohibits most abortions after the fetal cardiac activity is detected in pregnancy. Typically this occurs 6 weeks after your last menstrual period. There are some exceptions, but they are limited. Planned Parenthood can help you access care. Because of the ban, pregnant people do not have much time to get an abortion. It is crucial for you to seek abortion care as soon as possible once you decide to terminate your pregnancy.

Can I still obtain abortion care?

Yes, you can still obtain abortion care in Atlanta up to the legal limit, including care for exceptional cases. Abortion Finder can help you find a location.

Is there an exception to the six week abortion ban for rape and incest survivors?

Yes, but you must have a police report documenting the offense. Abortion care can be provided up to 22 weeks in cases of rape and incest, with a police report.

Are there medical exceptions to the ban?

Yes. If abortion is necessary to prevent a patient’s death or substantial physical impairment, an abortion center can provide abortion care up until 22 weeks after the last menstrual period. If you have an ectopic pregnancy, you must get medical attention at a hospital.

Is there an exception for fetal abnormalities?

In some cases, yes. A Maternal Fetal Health Specialist must first provide an abortion clinic with a statement that the fetus has a profound congenital or chromosomal anomaly incompatible with sustaining life. They can provide abortion care until 22 weeks if that requirement is satisfied.

Does this six-week ban apply to partial miscarriages?

Yes. If you have had a partial miscarriage and need additional care to complete it, you can only get that care if no fetal cardiac activity is detected.

What can I do if I want abortion care after six weeks?

Abortion laws are now determined at the state level.  You can find information about laws and other clinics in other states at Abortion Finder. You can also connect with Access Reproductive Care Southeast (ARC Southeast) to get assistance traveling to clinics outside of Georgia.
