Equestrian

Wesleyan's Equestrian program is award winning.

Wesleyan College is one of only 10 women’s colleges in the U.S. to include an equestrian team in its athletics.

Wesleyan competes in the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) in both hunt seat and western against schools that include: Clemson University, College of Charleston, Georgia Southern University, University of South Carolina, Lander University, and Converse College. Wesleyan equestrian team members have competed in post-season competitions including Regional Finals, Western Semi Finals, and Nationals. Team members have been recognized with awards including being named to IHSA All Academic Team, receiving the Jon Conyers Scholarship, and the USHJA/IHSA Sportsmanship Award for Zone 5.

Wesleyan’s Nancy Ellis Knox Equestrian Center is conveniently located on campus just a short walk from residence halls. The facility includes a 24-stall open-air barn for both lesson horses and student horses, six turnout paddocks, three hot/cold water washracks, climate-controlled tack room, separate boarder tack room, student lounge, classroom, private lockers for team riders, a dressage arena, and a large jumping arena with lights. Students may board their horses on campus.

Ryan's Hope Equestrian Scholarship

Valued between $1,000-$3,000 toward tuition at Wesleyan College, the Ryan's Hope Scholarship is renewable every year for four years (eight semesters) if the student remains in good standing and maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50. To qualify for the Ryan's Hope Equestrian Scholarship, eligible high school seniors and transfer student candidates must have a high school GPA of 2.50, and meet our minimum test score requirements. Applicants are required to ride for the equestrian coach, either in person on by submitting a video, to determine if they will receive the scholarship and for what amount.

Equine-Assisted Therapy Minor

Along with an Equestrian team Wesleyan offers a unique opportunity to minor in Equine-Assisted Therapy which allows students to explore a growing field in which mental health professionals utilize horses in a therapy setting. Equine-assisted therapies differ from therapeutic riding in that the therapy setting is conducted on the ground rather than in the saddle, and the horse is part of a three-pronged therapy team (mental health specialist, equine specialist, and the horse). Students will have the option to become EAGALA certified through the program. Read more about the requirements.

Catherine Baker, Head Equestrian Coach

Head Equestrian Coach Catherine Baker looks out on the horses.

Catherine Baker came to Wesleyan from Austin, Texas, as head equestrian coach in September of 2018 with plans to expand the program and help riders develop their leadership skills. In her first season at Wesleyan, 50% of our riders qualified for Regionals in both Hunt Seat and Western.

In addition to her duties with the equestrian team, Baker serves as a community lessons instructor, Nancy Ellis Knox Equestrian Center coordinator, and senior associate athletic director at Wesleyan. Coach Baker earned her bachelor of science degree in biology from St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, and masters degrees from the Texas A&M University (educational administration) and the University of Arkansas (business administration). Her certifications include Licensed Official FEI Federation Equestrian International and IEA Steward.

Baker started riding in high school, continued through college, and continues to enjoy riding with her daughter today.
