Dear Alumnae and Friends of Wesleyan,
I joined Wesleyan in August, which means my first weeks here have been spent doing something wonderful: reading your names.
The names in this report tell a story. Alumnae who have given every year for twenty, thirty, forty years. Families whose bequests arrived this year and are still shaping the College. Foundations and companies that chose Wesleyan. Friends who never attended but believe in what happens here. Together you committed more than $22 million in gifts and pledges this past year, the most in Wesleyan's history, and more than $16 million of it went straight to work.
I came to Wesleyan from another college built for women, and I can tell you that what you are funding here is rare. Faculty who know every student by name. A Leadership Lab in downtown Macon where students meet the people who will one day hire them. Scholarships that let a first-generation student say yes. A gymnasium being rebuilt for athletes whose numbers more than doubled in a single year.
You did that. Not the College, not the campaign, not the administration. You.
So before you look for your own name in the pages that follow, I want you to know what I have learned in my first weeks here: Wesleyan women, and the people who love them, show up. Year after year. Thank you for showing up for the 175 students who arrived this fall, and for the ones who haven't arrived yet.
I look forward to meeting you, and to thanking you in person.
With gratitude,
Patrice J. Williams
