Expand your Creative Mind

Wesleyan's Art Department prepares confident and creative innovators for professional careers in an increasingly visual and global world. Community and business leaders already know that creative minds are progressive solution finders. They highly value the graphic designers, artists, videographers, photographers, illustrators, designers, teachers, and museum personnel whose Liberal Arts education demonstrates an enthusiasm for discovery of the new.

Personal, artistic, and intellectual growth are fostered in our Art programs, as students hone their skills in art, design, and art historical research. Through these studies, our students develop awareness of the relevant contributions their creative minds can make.

The art student will gain a broad foundation in 2D and 3D media, and will build a more interdisciplinary degree through additional Liberal Arts electives. Often, our students will double major in Advertising Marketing Communication or may form a more interdisciplinary link to a Liberal Arts program outside of the Art Department. In the Junior and Senior semesters, students may choose to concentrate their upper level ART studies from the following: painting, drawing, ceramics, graphic design, video, photography, sculpture, or printmaking.

Creative ideas and the conditions in which to realize them:

The ample space in our Murphey Art Building rivals that at many larger institutions, and offers the equipment necessary to explore 2D, 3D, and multi-media art making. Advanced undergraduate students are given personal studio space, and our facilities are accessible almost 24/7, enabling our students to work collaboratively or in solitude beyond their scheduled class time. Art students at Wesleyan have the opportunity to work under the guidance of supportive faculty, who consider it a priority to help each student pursue their individual interests and goals.

Our three campus art galleries are venues for exhibitions of student work, of our permanent collection, and of invited artists. Wesleyan’s Permanent Collection of Art provides research opportunities and internships. Our undergraduate students can choose to work as gallery docents, as conservationists, or as gallery assistants learning the nuts & bolts of working as professionals in commercial galleries or museums.

The Murphey Art Building is surrounded on 3 sides by a 100 acre arboretum, providing an outdoor classroom exploring creativity & innovation through the lens of Nature.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote, Wesleyan art history students researched, curated, designed, and installed the exhibit Rebellious Women: Celebrating Women’s Suffrage, on display in the East Gallery, Porter Family Memorial Fine Arts Building, Wesleyan College.
