COVID-19 Policies on Campus

Protecting the health and safety of our campus community is Wesleyan College’s top priority. Notifications of confirmed cases will be posted on this web page as received.

Face Coverings 
  • Effective February 18, 2022, masks are optional on campus - both indoors and outdoors. Wesleyan could reinstate the mask mandate at any time if the risk level in the area or on campus increases. Individuals have the right to ask others to wear a mask in their personal office or room. 
  • Wesleyan College strongly encourages all members of our community to get the COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots as they become available and according to CDC regulations. Vaccination remains a key element for returning to normal operations. In keeping with our non-discriminatory policy, no student, faculty, or staff member should be mistreated based on their COVID-19 vaccination status.
  • Please do not ask members of our community their vaccination status, unless it is required by a program (e.g., nursing students and athletes, or required for contact tracing). 
  • So we can keep track of the vaccination status of our community, all faculty/staff and students are asked to provide evidence of vaccination (when completed). To upload your information follow these links. You must first log into WesPortal. 
  • In order to participate in clinicals, all nursing students must provide evidence of vaccination to the Nursing Department office.
Testing Positive for COVID-19

As per CDC guidelines, students, faculty, and staff who test positive for COVID-19 (regardless of symptoms) must 

  • Isolate off campus for 5 (five) days, 
  • Monitor your symptoms and seek medical attention if your symptoms are severe.
  • If you have no symptoms or your symptoms are resolving after 5 days, you can leave your house.
  • Continue to wear a mask around others for an additional 5 days.
  • Report your status to the College. Students who test positive for COVID-19 must report to Dean Henry and faculty and staff must report to Whitney Foster.
  • Students who test positive for COVID are not to attend class for five days.  While in isolation, students will not be penalized for missing class.  Students should contact their faculty member to make arrangements for making up missed work. 
  • You may return to campus when: at least 5 days have passed since symptoms first appeared AND at least 24 hours have passed since the last fever without the use of fever-reducing medications AND symptoms have improved.
Symptoms of COVID

Delta variant
According to the CDC, symptoms of the Delta variant of COVID-19 are fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, repeated shaking with chills, headache, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell, or muscle pain, congestion / runny nose, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure. Regardless of whether or not you have been vaccinated, if you show the symptoms of COVID-19, you may be infected and you should isolate until you are no longer contagious. 

Omicron variant
The Omicron variant is leading to a significant surge in COVID-19 cases and is known to be more easily transmitted than the Delta variant. According to the CDC, fever is not necessarily a symptom of the Omicron variant. Symptoms do include runny nose / congestion, headache, fatigue (mild or severe), sneezing, and sore throat.

Upon having symptoms of Covid-19 get a Covid-19 test. Health Services at Wesleyan can administer one. You can make an appointment here. If an appointment is not available the same day, email Dean Christy Henry at to determine a plan of action.

Exposure to COVID-19 

The CDC defines exposure as the following:

  • Being within 6 feet of someone who has tested positive for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period
  • Providing care at home to someone who is sick with COVID-19
  • Direct physical contact with someone who has tested positive (hugged or kissed them)
  • Shared eating or drinking utensils
  • A person with COVID sneezes or coughs on you, or somehow got respiratory droplets on you.

Close contact with the COVID-19 positive individual must have occurred during the time frame of 2 days prior to the individual’s symptom onset and beyond.

Given that Omicron is being transmitted equally between the vaccinated and unvaccinated, our policies do not differentiate between vaccination status upon being exposed to COVID.

If you have been in close contact:

  • Get tested 5 (five) days after your exposure, even if you don’t have symptoms. You are not required to quarantine while you wait for your test results.
  • If you experience symptoms, get tested immediately
  • Wear your mask anytime you are around any other person. Strict mask wearing is essential to slow the spread.
  • If you live in the same room or household as someone who tested positive, you may choose to quarantine for 5 days. Still test at day 5.

At day 5, if you test positive, follow the protocol for testing positive. If you test negative you may return to normal behavior and wear a mask for an additional 5 days when around others. 

Classroom Attendance
  • Students who test positive for COVID are not to attend class for five days.  While in isolation, students will not be penalized for missing class. Students should contact their faculty member to make arrangements for making up missed work. 
Faculty/Staff COVID-19-Related Leave
  • COVID-19-specific leave for isolation and quarantine is not available.
  • Employees who must isolate or quarantine due to COVID-19 illness or exposure may work remotely during this time with the approval of their supervisor. The nature of their position influences whether an employee is able to work remotely.
  • Faculty who must isolate or quarantine may put their class online for the period of time they are in isolation or quarantine. All faculty must notify the Provost’s Office immediately upon the need to quarantine or isolate. It is the faculty member’s responsibility to notify their students of any change of modality.

When remote work is not possible, employees who must isolate or quarantine due to COVID-19 must use their sick leave to be away from work. When all sick leave has been used, the employee should contact the Director of Human Resources to request a reasonable extension.
