The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued new COVID guidance for fully vaccinated individuals on Thursday, May 13, 2021. Based on that information, Wesleyan College has updated its guidance for face coverings, vaccination, and social distancing for those on campus.
Effective immediately, fully vaccinated individuals may resume campus classes and other gatherings without wearing a face covering or physically distancing. These include visitors to Willet Library, Mathews Athletic Center, Anderson Dining Hall, Pierce Chapel, Porter Auditorium, campus tours, and athletic events.
Unvaccinated individuals are strongly encouraged to get a vaccine, to continue wearing a face covering, and to continue socially distancing from others when possible. We are aware that there are members of our community who will need to continue to wear a mask. Out of respect for the health of others, if you are asked to wear a mask in an individual’s private space (such as an office or room) we ask that you comply with that request.
Residential students will be required prior to move-in to upload proof of vaccination OR a negative COVID test (and sign a form indicating they understand the process if they test positive for COVID.) In the fall, our classrooms will go back to in-person, with no masking or social distancing. We will not be providing quarantine or isolation spaces on campus. Therefore, if you have not received a vaccine, we STRONGLY encourage you to do so as soon as possible.
Against the background of an unprecedented year when the world’s population faced a major health crisis never experienced in our lifetime, the Wesleyan community enforced a response plan to keep the College open and our constituents safe. Making the best of a dreadful situation, a teaching and learning environment was created to provide support for everyone on campus. We are beyond proud of the way students and faculty transitioned to remote instruction and learning. We are confident that the integrity of the excellent academic experiences for which Wesleyan is known persevered through tough times.
Students exhibited maturity and demonstrated their willingness to keep one another and their community safe by adhering to guidelines set forth by the CDC and adopted by their College. Staff and faculty worked quickly to revamp the ways their departments operated. As a result, we made it through eighteen months with only fifty-two positive cases of COVID-19. Based on a population of more than 800 students, faculty, and staff who come through the campus regularly, that’s a six percent rate of infection, which is less than one third of the infection rate locally.
Our fantastic nursing department administered 520 doses of the vaccine to our community (155 doses to faculty and staff and 365 doses to students.) Because of their hard work, most of our faculty/staff and more than half of our students have been vaccinated.
Wesleyan College is privileged to steward many arts and cultural events and share them with the community. Most are free and open to the public. Wesleyan art galleries are open M-F 1:30 – 5:00 PM and on Wesleyan Market Saturdays from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM.View More
