Adelaide entered the newspaper industry with full force in 1957 when she and her husband, Graham Ponder, purchased The Madisonian, one of the oldest newspapers in the South and the only paper serving Morgan County. As the weekly’s new editor, Adelaide was stepping into big shoes. The Madisonianbegan in 1840 as Southern Miscellany –– edited by award-winning Georgia Journalist William Tappan Thompson –– and was one of the oldest continuing businesses in the county. As co-publisher and one of just a few women editors in the state, Adelaide maintained a high level of excellence and produced a journalistically sound newspaper.  More info

When Alaina entered Wesleyan, she had no plans to follow in the footsteps of her father, a pastor in the United Methodist Church. Her plans were to earn a degree in graphic design and eventually start her own firm. But the summer after her freshman year at Wesleyan, Alaina said God pushed her in a different direction. While working as a camp counselor at Epworth By The Sea on St. Simon’s Island, Alaina claimed God spoke to her through the campers and told her to go into full time ministry. “I struggled with this calling at first, but finally agreed to go with God’s plan,” Alaina said.   More info

If Ann Parsons Odum’s life were depicted in one of her paintings – what would we see? The scenes would reveal a colorful life overflowing with passionate devotion to her family, friends, church, and beloved hometown of Duluth, Georgia. For the past 40 years, Ann has dedicated a significant amount of time to preserving the history of Duluth through her artwork. Student, parent, faculty member, liaison to the Methodist Church, alumnae leader – for over 35 years Anne has offered her considerable talents in service to her alma mater with enthusiasm, humility, and love. “For anyone planning a future in science, an open mind is a must.” This advice from Anne-Kathrin's former high school teacher became a leading motto throughout her education and research. Anne-Kathrin decided at an early age to focus her studies toward the United States by attending the international boarding school Schule Schloss Salem. Her dream to study in the U.S. came true when she received a Rotary Scholarship to attend Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. In 2009, she joined the corporate finance advisory division of PricewaterhouseCoopers and is currently pursuing the two-year full-time MBA program at Harvard Business School.  More info

As a mathematics and educational studies double major, this Munroe Scholar plans to teach high school in Bibb County. Already she has gained experience by tutoring through Wesleyan’s Academic and Writing Centers. “The thing I love most about teaching is watching my students get excited about learning math. I feel at home in the math classroom,” she said. The self-proclaimed “shy girl who had a lot to say” worked on developing communication skills in order to gain confidence in public speaking. She gives partial credit to her four-year participation in the musical antics of STUNT, something she said she would never have considered at another college.   More info

As a kid, FOX Medical Reporter Beth Galvin ’87 wrote stories to entertain her father. Later, she wrote for her high school newspaper and also served as the copy editor for the yearbook. Today, Beth is an award-winning journalist and the regular face of FOX5’s Health Watch. Her inspiring and informative reporting style quickly caught the attention of viewers and also media and medical professionals. She won a regional Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Reporting and an award for Specialty Reporting from the Georgia Associated Press Broadcasters. The Georgia Physicians Association/Atlanta Medical Association also presented her with an award for Outstanding Health Reporting.   More info

When Elizabeth “Betsy” Herlong returns to Wesleyan for her ten-year reunion, she hopes to be able to tell her Wesleyan Green Knight sisters that she has travelled across Europe and lives in a city like Paris. She would like to be able to say she has taken the lesson she learned at Wesleyan and applied them in her post-college life. “While I think a good-paying job with benefits is important,” Betsy said, “I think it will be more important for me to be able to tell my classmates that I am happy and that I’ve continued to grow as a person.”   More info

Betty Thompson has performed throughout her career on a world stage. “I knew Mother Teresa before she was a star and Desmond Tutu before he was a bishop,” she said. Betty Thompson was a prophetic force in religious journalism for more than four decades. Before her retirement at the end of 1994, she gave thirty-five years of distinguished and dedicated service to the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM). After her retirement, Betty continued to garner recognition. In 1998, The World Association for Christian Communication designated her a life member. And, in 2001, she was inducted into the Methodist Communicators Hall of Fame.  More info

Bonnie Smith Slovis, M.D. Class of 1966

At the age of forty, after having successfully raised two sons and worked in a variety of professions, and after earning two master’s degrees, Bonnie Smith Slovis ’66, M.D., M.Ed., MSHS, FCCP, began the journey to realizing her childhood dream. In 1986, twenty years after graduating from Wesleyan, Bonnie entered Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. Today Bonnie is the Associate Director for Clinical Affairs of the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, and Critical Care, Director of the Pulmonary Patient Care Center, Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Center, Director of Outpatient Pulmonary Medicine, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.   More info
