The Center for Global Initiatives (CGI) coordinates Wesleyan’s globally themed curricular and extracurricular programs by bringing together the College’s broad international student population, globally minded faculty and academic resources, long-standing connections to the wider world, and the rich resources of the Georgia community.
At the heart of the CGI’s efforts are two key initiatives: The Global Scholars Program (WCGSP) and the Confucius Institute at Wesleyan College (CIWC). The WCGSP invites qualified high school seniors from all across America to Scholarship Day to interview for this full-tuition scholarship program that prepares them to meet the challenges of an interconnected world and global economy. Through WCGSP, students develop leadership and problem-solving skills and build intercultural and linguistic competence. While on the Wesleyan campus, Global Scholars live and learn with students from places such as Nepal, Australia, China, Rwanda, Korea, and Sweden. They study with visiting international scholars, artists, and experts. They have a Global Scholars advisor who assists in planning their individualized course of study. After successful completion of their sophomore year, Wesleyan Global Scholars receive up to $3,500 for an international study experience of their choice.
The Confucius Institute at Wesleyan College celebrates the longstanding relationship between Wesleyan and China, especially with the legendary Soong Sisters. The CIWC’s multifold mission is to offer Chinese language instruction; promote Chinese Culture; foster intercultural exchange with China among students, educators, and the Central Georgia community; and celebrate the lives of women through education and social change.
In addition to WCGSP and CIWC, the CGI supports the Asian studies minor, which includes courses on Chinese culture, taught by visiting scholars from Guangzhou University, Wesleyan’s partner institution in China. The Center also works closely with the College’s modern language and study abroad programs to enrich the campus community and provide students with meaningful educational experiences abroad.
The CGI also works with student organizations such as the College’s award-winning Model UN Club and AXIS, the Association for eXemplary International Students. Through participation in the Model UN Club students from diverse majors gain deeper understanding of the history, culture, and politics of nations and provides an opportunity to practice their own leadership, speaking, and writing skills. As one of the most visible student organizations on campus, AXIS sponsors yearlong programming that helps Wesleyan students take advantage of the cultural richness international students bring to campus.
