Find locally grown produce and fun at Wesleyan’s Market

Macon, GA – Wesleyan College invites the community to experience its newest event, the Wesleyan Market, held the first Saturday of each month on the main quad. The fun outdoor community event features a variety of locally grown and produced items ranging from flowers and organic fruits and vegetables to baked goods. Music, fun & educational events also are offered. Although April marks the first Wesleyan Market event, the College plans to hold the event each month. It’s free and open to the public.

Locally grown produce vendors will vary monthly. Some vendors plan to offer strawberries, pecans, peach preserves, perennials, shrubs, onions, squash, cabbage, artisanal cheeses, eggs, barbeque, Brunswick stew, whole bean coffee, cakes, cookies, petit fours, breads, coffee cakes, honey, pollen, hand-made soaps, bath and body items, sea salt, herbal teas, boiled peanuts, and more!

Fun educational displays and art demonstrations will be offered, such as pottery demonstrations by Wesleyan Professor of Sculpture John Skelton and gardening tips from Ask a Master Gardener. Entertainment is provided by community performance groups like the Wesleyan Washboard Band, Divine Purpose from New Birth Ministries Church, and the Mount De Sales Academy High School Choir.

The Wesleyan Market is part of a larger college initiative to take an active leadership role by adopting innovative programs to encourage students and members of the greater community to live greener lives. In 2007, Wesleyan President Ruth Knox committed to sharply reducing and eventually eliminating all of the College’s global warming emissions, and accelerating the research and educational efforts to equip society to re-stabilize the earth’s climate.

Through a variety of efforts, the College intends to address its concerns about the future of the environment and the quality of life for future generations. This spring, Wesleyan Dining Services began actively participating in buying locally grown produce in every instance when it's available. Buying locally grown produce is just one way to reduce your carbon footprint. The practice helps farmers in our area financially, aids in the reduction of diesel fuel and gasoline usage, and provides families with fresher produce. Through the Wesleyan market event, the College intends to assist families in locating local produce growers.

Some participating vendors include: Lane Southern Orchards (strawberries, pecans, and peach preserves), Agape Nursery (assorted perennials and shrubbery), Pleasant Hill Community Garden (variety of vegetables), Flat Creek Lodge Dairy (variety of cheeses), JL’s Barbeque (barbeque and Brunswick stew), Elliott Farms (strawberries, onions, squash and cabbage), Joshua Cup (bulk whole bean coffee, fresh roasted coffee, and food items), Lisa Mae (cakes, cookies, petit fours, breads, and coffee cakes), Shamrock Apiaries (honey and pollen), Nanty’s Naturals (hand-made soaps and other bath and body items), Curtis Yaun (sea salt, herbal teas, and handmade soaps), Hardy Farms (boiled and roasted peanuts), and New Birth Ministries Church (locally-produced baked goods).
