Find locally grown produce, baked goods, art, & fun at Wesleyan’s Market
Wesleyan college invites the community to experience the Wesleyan Market, held the second Saturday of each month (during spring, summer, and fall) on the front campus. The fun outdoor community event features a variety of locally grown and produced items ranging from flowers, baked goods, and organic fruits and vegetables to hand-made soaps, and work by local artist. Music, fun and educational events are also offered. It’s free and open to the public.
Locally grown produce vendors will vary monthly. Some vendors plan to offer fresh strawberries, pecans, peach preserves, perennials and shrubs, onions, squash, cabbage, eggs, cakes, cookies, breads, coffee cakes, honey, pollen, hand-made soaps, bath and body items, jewelry, boiled peanuts and more!
Fun educational displays and art demonstrations are offered, such as pottery demonstrations by Wesleyan Professor of Sculpture John Skelton and gardening tips from Ask a Master Gardner. Entertainment is provided by community performance groups like the Wesleyan Washboard Band and Patricia Vasser with Vineville Academy.
The Wesleyan Market is part of a larger college initiative to take an active leadership role by adopting innovative programs to encourage students and members of the greater community to live greener lives. Buying locally grown produces is just one way to reduce your carbon footprint. The practice helps farmers in our area financially, aids in the reduction of diesel fuel and gasoline usage, and provides families in locating local produce growers.
Some past participating vendors include: Deer Creek Farms (berries and produce), R&G Farms (hydroponic lettuce and basil), Jonah’s on Johnston (fresh baked breads, pastries and pizza), J.E. Taylor (boiled peanuts and produce), McCrackin Street Sweets (freshly made fudge, candies and candied popcorn), Agape Nursery (assorted perennials and shrubbery), Shamrock Apiaries (honey, pollen and beeswax candles), and Vinnie’s Bakery (locally-produced baked goods).
