Wesleyan featured in 2008 Edition of The Princeton Review annual college guide: “The Best 366 Colleges”

Wesleyan College offers students an outstanding undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review. The New York-based education services company features the college in the new 2008 edition of its annual book, "The Best 366 Colleges." Only about 15% of the four-year colleges in America and two Canadian colleges were chosen for the book. It has two-page profiles of the schools and student survey-based ranking lists of top 20 colleges in more than 60 categories.

• Ranked 1st for “Lots of Race/Class Interaction”
• Ranked 2nd for “Diverse Student Population”
• Ranked 6th for low beer usage in "Got Milk?"
• Ranked 8th for low hard liquor usage reported in "Scotch & Soda, Hold the Scotch"
• Ranked 11th for "Class Discussion Encouraged"
• Ranked 17th for low marijuana use in "Don't inhale"
• Ranked 19th for Best College Theater
• 13th nationally on "Stone Cold Sober Schools List" (Based on a combination of survey questions concerning the use of alcohol and drugs, hours of study each day, and the popularity of the Greek system)
• 15th out of 366 colleges where "Town-Gown Relations are Great," indicating how well students get along with local residents
According to Robert Franek, Princeton Review's V.P., Publishing, "We chose schools for this book primarily for their outstanding academics. We evaluated them based on institutional data we collect about the schools, feedback from students attending them, and our visits to schools over the years. We also consider the opinions of independent college counselors, students, and parents we hear from year-long. Finally, we work to have a wide representation of colleges in the book by region, size, selectivity and character."
In its profile on Wesleyan College, The Princeton Review gave the college an Academic Rating of 90 high with scores for interesting and accessible faculty. The College’s Quality of Life Rating is listed at 89. The profile also quotes extensively from Wesleyan students surveyed for the book. Among their candid comments: “giving exceptional women exceptional education at an affordable price” and “you will love every minute here, especially if participating in lots of traditions appeals to you.”
In a "Survey Says. . ." sidebar in the book's profile on Wesleyan, common student comments are listed and include: “small classes,” “students are friendly,” “campus feels safe,” “no one cheats,” and “diverse student types on campus,” and “different types of students interact.” Among the Top 366 colleges, Wesleyan ranked in the Top 10 for four categories and in the Top 20 for five categories.
The ranking lists in the 2008 edition of "The Best 366 Colleges" are based on The Princeton Review's survey of 120,000 students (about 325 per campus on average) attending the 366 colleges in the book. A college's appearance on these lists is attributable to a high consensus among its surveyed students about the subject. The 80-question survey asked students to rate their schools on several topics and report on their campus experiences at them. Ranking lists report the top 20 schools in categories that range from best professors, administration, and campus food to lists based on student body political leanings, race/class relations, sports interests, and other aspects of campus life. The Princeton Review does not rank the colleges in the book 1 to 366 in any single category, nor do the rankings reflect The Princeton Review's opinion of the schools.. |
