Contemporary Installation Explores X
Content Manager
X marks the spot this fall at Wesleyan College when a contemporary art installation by Atlanta artist Elyse Defoor transforms two of the College’s galleries. The large-scale abstract paintings, sculpture, and mixed media of Defoor’s X.U.ME series explore the symbol of X. After a time of obscurity, Defoor intends to bring the symbol and its many past and present connotations to light. The exhibition will open Tuesday, September 25, 2007 and run through Monday, October 22, 2007. An Opening Reception with the artist is scheduled for Tuesday, September 25, 2007 6:30 – 8:00PM. Gallery talk by the artist starts at 6:45PM
in the Collier East Gallery and then proceeds to the Murphey Gallery.

Inspired by haunting signs of death and destruction in 2005, Defoor first noticed X as a symbol violently sprayed on homes destroyed by hurricane Katrina. “Everywhere I started seeing Xs,” she states in a poem within the series. “Shadows crossed high above my bed, Malcolm, multiply, on Manson’s head. Railroad crossings, deleted at will, X’d out, x-rated, cautions us still.” According to the artist, the two-gallery installation will explore emotion through the language of X; how X is to U and ME.

A Hambridge Fellow, Defoor received her BFA from the University of Georgia in 1973 with post- graduate work at the Atlanta College of Art in the mid-eighties. She has had solo exhibits and participated in group shows throughout the Southeast and in New York City. Her work can also be found in numerous private collections from Singapore to Switzerland.

“Art is my religion,” said Defoor. “I connect with the Sacred when I am in communion with the creative spirit. From this solitary experience, if my work touches others on a deep psychic level, that to me is Success. To make art which helps bridge the conscious with the unconscious and reflect our inner and outer worlds, this is my purpose.”
