Wesleyan Announces New Scholarships for Girl Scout Gold Award Recipients
|
Effective Fall Semester 2010, Wesleyan College will award annual scholarships valued at $9,000 a year to Girl Scout Gold Award recipients. The new scholarship program was developed to honor the commitment to service and community leadership exemplified through the Girl Scout Gold Award program. Wesleyan College places a high value on the attributes demonstrated by the young women who achieve the extraordinary distinction of a Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award that a Girl Scout may earn. For many Girl Scouts, the leadership skills, organizational skills, and sense of community and commitment that come from "going for the Gold" set the foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship. Last year, an estimated 5,500 girls received the prestigious award, about 5.4% of the eligible registered Girl Scouts in grades 10-12.
Through the new scholarship program, Wesleyan aims to attract many of these outstanding young women to its campus. Wesleyan College boasts a rich tradition of service that has inspired leaders for more than 170 years. Wesleyan was founded in 1836 as the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women. Today it is regarded as one of the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges and is consistently recognized for academic excellence. The Wesleyan experience is designed to cultivate tomorrow's leaders, women who are invested and fully engaged in their community. At Wesleyan, First for Women isn’t just a claim to fame -- it’s a philosophy that separates our learning community from all others.
Awards
The annual scholarship is valued at $9,000 toward tuition at Wesleyan College, and is renewable every year for four years, or eight semesters, if the student remains in good standing and maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. While this cannot be combined with any other Wesleyan College sponsored scholarship, it can be replaced with a higher valued scholarship if the student meets additional qualifications. The Wesleyan Gold Award scholarship recipient can supplement her Wesleyan scholarship with state and federal aid.
Admissions and Eligibility
Eligible high school seniors may apply for the Wesleyan Gold Award scholarship if they plan to complete requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award by late Spring of their senior year. Eligible scholarship candidates also should posses a minimum SAT score of 1100 (combined Critical Reading and Math) or an ACT score of 25 (Composite) and a high school GPA of 3.0.
