
Wesleyan College announced the recipients of three prestigious awards recognizing excellence in teaching during its Honors Day ceremony held April 22, 2010. Assistant Professor of Communication Dr. Deidra Donmoyer was the recipient of the 2010 Vulcan Materials Company Teaching Excellence Award. The award is presented annually to a faculty member who has made a distinct difference in the teaching climate of the college in such areas as model classroom teaching, campus leadership, pioneering teaching methodology, creative course development, and instructional support.
Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Michele Martin was the recipient of the 2010 Ann Munck Award for Excellence in Teaching. This award, established in 1988 by Miss Munck’s past students, colleagues, and friends, is based on the superior example she established and is given each year to the Wesleyan College faculty member who best exemplifies excellence in knowledge, method of instruction, rapport with students, teaching behavior and attitude, concern for teaching, stimulating classroom environment, achievement of one’s students, and loyalty to Wesleyan – its goals and mission.
Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Holly Boettger-Tong was presented with the 2010 United Methodist Church Exemplary Teacher Award. Each year the Division of Higher Education of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church supports the Exemplary Teacher Award which is given to a member of the Wesleyan faculty who demonstrates excellence in teaching; concern for students and colleagues; commitment to value-centered education; and service to students, the institution, the community, and the church.
Green-Barnes honored with
EFNEP Champion Award
Rhonda Green-Barnes, director of Wesleyan College’s Lane Center, was recently awarded the 40th Anniversary EFNEP Champion Award by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension - Colleges of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and Family and Consumer Services. EFNEP (Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program) is a 40 year old federally funded program found in every state and U.S. territory, and provides nutrition education for low income families with children, helping them learn how to feed their children healthy meals and snacks, stretch their food dollars, and reduce the risk of food-borne illnesses. Green-Barnes currently serves on EFNEP’s advisory board.
“Rhonda has helped us get and retain audiences for our program for a number of years and continued to do so after joining the staff at Wesleyan College,” said Pearl T. Solomon, Bibb County Extension Agent. “EFNEP is designed to provide nutrition education for low income families. Presently, we are trying to reach the parents of the children that are served under Wesleyan’s program.”
Rhonda Green-Barnes’ professional service includes more than 15 years of social service experience devoted to developing and implementing motivational, educational, and cultural arts programming designed to uplift disadvantaged families and children. As Director of Wesleyan College’s Lane Center for Community Engagement and Service, Green-Barnes works with students eager to gain insight about community needs and develop leadership skills through projects like Aunt Maggie’s Kitchen Table, The William and Ellen Craft Saturday School, Wesleyan Volunteers for Literacy, Habitat for Humanity, WOW Days for Macon, and numerous conferences about women’s health and wellness.

Wesleyan Professor Donovan wins APSA Campus Teaching Award
The American Political Science Association (APSA) and national political science honor society Pi Sigma Alpha, recently awarded the APSA Campus Teaching Award to Barbara Donovan, professor of political science at Wesleyan College. The honor recognizes exceptional teaching by political science faculty.
Donovan is a 1985 graduate of Tufts University who earned her masters degree in area studies from the University of London in 1987 and a PhD in political science from Georgetown University in 1997. She is Dupont Guerry Chair of History and Economics, and History, Politics, and Sociocultural Studies Department Chair at Wesleyan where she specializes in teaching courses in German and European politics, democratization, regional integration, and immigration.

Rowan receives Quillian Distinguished Teaching Award
Wesleyan College Professor of Psychology Dr. James Donald Rowan was awarded the 2009 Quillian Distinguished Teaching Award during an opening convocation ceremony held in the college’s Porter Auditorium on August 27, 2009. Rowan has served on the Wesleyan faculty for twelve years. He earned a Ph.D. and M.A. degree from Kent State University and a B.A. degree from Malone College.
The Quillian Award honors former president William F. Quillian, who twice served as president of Wesleyan College, and recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates excellence in teaching and commitment to an outstanding learning community and is regarded by both faculty and students as a premier educator. Wesleyan's Dean Fowler receives prestigious Medallion Award
Wesleyan College Dean Dr. Vivia Lawton Fowler returned to her alma mater, Columbia College, in South Carolina to receive the prestigious Medallion Award at a dinner and awards ceremony held in November. Fowler was one of three honorees to receive the 2009 Medallion Award, along with Emory University Dean Dr. Jan Love and 2009 National Mother of the Year Betty Ulmer McGregor.
Kel-Ann Eyler receives GSCPA's prestigious Accounting Educator of the Year Award
Wesleyan College Associate Professor of Accounting Dr. Kel-Ann Eyler was awarded the Accounting Educator of the Year Award from the Georgia Society for CPAs (GSCPA). Each year, the prestigious award is presented by the GSCPA Educational Foundation to one educator who has demonstrated outstanding contributions to educating accountants.
Inaugurated over 20 years ago, the award program was established to encourage colleges and universities throughout Georgia to maintain a high level of education of those students who study accounting and to raise the level of awareness for the importance of an accounting education in the business community.
The statewide award also recognizes recipients for outstanding leadership in professional organizations, writing, speaking and research in the business field and motivating students to excellent performance in their scholastic and professional careers. The award presentation was made during the GSCPA 2009 annual meeting.
Matthew Martin Wins Fulbright
Matthew R. Martin, Ph.D., Wesleyan College Professor of English, was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at Vilnius Pedagogical University in Vilnius, Lithuania. According to the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, Martin is one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program during 2007-2008. Unlike the majority of those 800 Fulbright Scholars traveling abroad, Matt Martin packed up his entire family – wife and fellow Wesleyan professor Shelly plus three kids Caroline, Grace, and Thomas – and headed to Lithuania. From February to June 2008, Martin taught a survey in American literature to third year undergraduates and lead a creative writing seminar for masters level students at Vilnius Pedagogical University.
