Center for the Arts Academy Summer Intensive: June 6 - 12, 2010
A week-long fine arts immersion program for rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors on the campus of Wesleyan College.
Rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors can explore a variety of fine arts disciplines with our outstanding faculty during a one-week immersion program. Have fun, explore multiple areas of interest and experience college life. The program is designed specifically for high school students to study, create and perform in studio art, music, or theatre. In addition to advanced study of the arts, you’ll experience life at the world’s oldest college for women and learn from our world-class faculty.
Wesleyan College was founded in 1836 as the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women. Today it is regarded as one of the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges and is consistently recognized for academic excellence. Since its founding, Wesleyan has embraced the arts with programs of study in music, visual arts, and theatre. Dynamic instruction and performance in each of these disciplines attracts creative women from around the world for the latest in fine arts instruction.

The Academy’s one-week intensive program of supervised activities takes full advantage of life on the Wesleyan campus. Students live in residence halls, eat in the historic Anderson Dining Room, and have access to the Mathews Athletic Center facilities.

Admissions and Eligibility
Female students who have successfully completed at least their freshman year in high school and are interested in creative or performing arts may attend Center for the Arts Academy Summer Intensive.
2010 Fees & Tuition - Center for the Arts Academy Week-long Summer Intensive:
Residential students: $500
Includes all classes and activities, room and board (double occupancy in residence halls and three meals daily in Anderson Dining Hall), access to laundry facilities, WiFi internet and Mathews Athletic Center.
Commuter students: $400
Includes all classes and activities and three meals daily in Anderson Dining Hall.
Supply fee for each Art Class: $25

2010 Course Offerings
Academy students may select one morning class and one afternoon class from these offerings:
Morning Classes 9 - 11:30 a.m. (choose one)
Applied Lessons in Organ, Piano and Voice - Students with some prior background in these disciplines may have private lessons. Each lesson is 45 minutes and scheduled between 9:00 and 12 noon. Come with prepared repertoire if possible, or you may be assigned new pieces. Prepare during the week fo a final performance. Limited to 4 piano students, 4 organ students and 8 voice students. Study with international concert pianist Edward Eikner, College organist Dr. Michael McGhee, mezzo soprano Nadine Whitney, or Ellen Hanson, soprano.
Auditions for Stage and Screen - Audition technique, using materials from celebrated plays and current TV/film projects, taught by experienced professional actor and Adjunct Professor, Robert Fieldsteel.
Printmaking - Learn the ancient art of relief printmaking. Study European & Japanese woodblocks and create original prints. Taught by professional printmaker and Associate Professor of Art, Dennis Applebee, MFA.
Stone Sculpture - Study the work of master stone sculptors and spend the week aggressively carving your own stone sculptures using chisels, rasps, and rifflers. We will also use polishing techniques to bring out the beauty of the colors in your stone. Taught by John Skelton, MFA, associate professor of art.
Afternoon classes - 1 - 3:30 p.m. (choose one)
Beginning Wheel Throwing - Start with hand-building techniques, and then spend 4 full classes on the ancient art of throwing pottery on the wheel, glazing and decorating. Study the work of master potters with Johnnie Skelton, MAT. (Finished pottery will be fired and available for pick up the week after classes.)
Bookmaking - The art of bookmaking is something you’re bound to love! Study basic book binding techniques and create original hand-bound books of your own. Course taught by artist and Adjunct Professor, Kristen Applebee, MFA.
Music Appreciation - Musical Stories: Explore stories told through music and the stories behind the music. Study with Dr. Michael McGhee, College organist and assistant professor of music for organ, harpsichord, music theory, music history and literature.
Scene Study Intensive - Text and Performance Boot Camp taught by award-winning director and Assistant Professor of Theatre, Dr. Jan Lewis
4:00 - 5:15 p.m. Choral Ensemble - Students will enjoy the opportunity to make music within the context of a choral ensemble. Focus will be given to musicianship, sight-reading skills, vocal technique, diction and interpretation. A variety of repertoire will be introduced and prepared for a final performance. With Nadine Whitney, chair of the music department and active performer in recital, concert, and opera across the United States and in Europe. |
