Pioneers Basketball Season Ends with 74-14 loss at Rival Agnes Scott
Macon, GA (Feb. 26, 2008) – The Pioneers Basketball Team suffered a season ending loss Tuesday evening at Agnes Scott 74-14 in the first round of the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament. Traveling with only six players, the Pioneers (0-20, 0-13 GSAC) fell behind early to the second seeded Scotties and were unable to recover. By halftime the lead ballooned to 36-5.
Freshman Andrea Moses, a GSAC All-Freshman Team recipient, led the Pioneers scoring nine points, with 13 rebounds, two steals and three blocks in 33 minutes. Freshman Eleanor Click chipped in five points and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds, while playing all 40 minutes. Wesleyan sorely missed the services of junior Davida Dwyer, the team’s second leading scorer and rebounder (9.9 ppg, 7.8 reb.) who was out sick. The Scotties 17-8, 10-3 GSAC) were led by Laura Coleman’s 32 points and Janee’ Blake’s 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists.
Pioneers Basketball Players Earn Conference Awards
Macon, GA (Feb. 26, 2008) – The Great South Athletic Conference announced its 2007-08 women’s basketball awards today. Pioneer Freshman Andrea Moses was named to the GSAC All-Freshman Team while senior Stephanie Hood and sophomore Crystal Church earned All-Academic honors.
Moses, ranks in the top 15 in the GSAC in points, rebounds and minutes played, averaging 9.4 points (14th), 9.4 rebounds (T-2nd) and 29.9 minutes played (7th). As members of the All-Academic Team, Church and Hood have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. Church leads the conference in minutes per game, 35.83 and ranks eighth in assists, 2.33. Hood is participating in her first year of basketball.
“We made great improvements throughout the season,” said Head Coach Jason Henry. “Even through we were lacking in the win/loss column are positive attitude and hard work will provide us with building blocks for seasons to come. I am very proud of each and every one of our players, especially those that continued to work hard and be dedicated to the team the entire season”
Lions Need no Help from Tigers or Bears to Top Pioneers 101-29
Macon, GA (Feb. 20, 2008) – The Pioneers Basketball Team lost its final home game of the season 101-29 against Piedmont College Wednesday evening at Porter Gymnasium. Piedmont (21-3, 11-0 GSAC), the Great South Athletic Conference’s regular season champions saw all 15 players score, while freshman Brandi Syfan’s 20 points and four rebounds led the Lion’s charge. The Pioneers (0-19, 0-12 GSAC), playing without freshman Andrea Moses, received an inspired effort from junior Davida Dwyer. In 35 minutes, Dwyer scored 16 points with 10 rebounds on 7-17 shooting.
Pioneers Basketball Hosts Final Home Game
Macon, GA (Feb. 20, 2008) – The Pioneers Basketball Team hosts its final home game tonight against Piedmont College (tip-off 6 p.m.). The Lions (20-3, 10-0 GSAC) clinched the Great South Athletic Conference regular season title last week. With games remaining against Wesleyan and Maryville, Piedmont will seek to finish the conference schedule undefeated. The Pioneers (0-18, 0-11 GSAC) close out the regular season seeking continued growth during a season of development and learning.
Pioneer Weekend Sports Wrap
Macon, GA (Feb. 19, 2008) – Pioneers Athletics concluded a busy weekend with the softball team returning from a weekend tournament at Emory University and the basketball team playing Monday at Agnes Scott. Wesleyan Softball (1-7, 1-0 GSAC) finished with a 1-1 record at the tournament. The team’s final game against Emory was suspended and is scheduled for completion at a later date. The Pioneers earned their first victory of the season, defeating Great South Athletic Conference opponent Maryville College 4-2 on Sunday before falling to Greensboro College 15-2. The Pioneers Basketball Team (0-18, 0-11 GSAC) closed out the busy sports weekend for Wesleyan athletics losing to rival Agnes Scott College 101-17.
Pioneers fall at LaGrange, 69-11
Macon, GA (Feb. 14, 2008) – The Pioneers Basketball Team traveled to LaGrange College Wednesday, falling 69-11. Wesleyan (0-17, 0-10 GSAC), traveling with only seven players, was unable to keep up with a Panthers team which saw 10 different players log at least 15 minutes. Freshman Andrea Moses led the Pioneers with four points, 10 rebounds and one block in 35 minutes. LaGrange (9-13, 4-6 GSAC) forward Jessica Barba led a Panthers charge, scoring 18 points with nine rebounds in just 19 minutes.
Jaguars Run Loose at Wesleyan
Macon, GA (Feb. 9, 2008) – The Pioneers Basketball Team lost Saturday at home to Great South Athletic Conference foe Spelman College 88-29. The team’s lone senior, Stephanie Hood was honored at halftime with a medley by Wesleyannes.
The Jaguars (5-15, 2-8 GSAC) size, strength and depth contributed to a 54-37 rebounding advantage which led to 16 second chance points. Spelman bench provided a 51 points to zero for the Pioneers.
Pioneers (0-16, 0-9 GSAC) junior Davida Dwyer paced the team with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while freshman Andrea Moses added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Lady Hawks Soar Past Pioneers 85-26
Macon, GA (Feb. 8, 2008) – The Wesleyan College Basketball Team lost on the road to Great South Athletic Conference opponent Huntingdon College Thursday evening 85-26. Wesleyan (0-15, 0-8 GSAC) sophomore guard Crystal Church led all pioneers in scoring with 13 points to go along with five rebounds and three steals in 40 minutes. Freshman Andrea Moses chipped in seven points while grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. Forward Kirsten Kline was one of five Lady Hawks (13-7, 5-2 GSAC) to score in double figures, pacing the team with 16 points and 13 rebounds. As a team, Huntingdon held a 69-40 advantage on the glass over Wesleyan.
Scots Crash Coach Henry’s Birthday Party
Maryville, TN (Feb. 5, 2008) – The Pioneers hit the road Monday traveling to Tennessee to face the Scots of Maryville College. Despite the team’s best efforts to present Coach Henry his first coaching victory of the season on his birthday, Maryville had no party favors, beating the Pioneers 104-32.
Freshman Andrea Moses was a monster for the Pioneers with a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds, while junior Davida Dwyer chipped in eight points and six rebounds. In the end, the short-handed Pioneers were unable to hang with a Scots team that saw 14 players log 10 minutes or more. Wesleyan traveled seven players and had all five starters play at least 29 minutes. The Scots’ (11-8, 6-2 GSAC) Ashley Holders equaled Moses’ 17 points and also contributed six steals.
Scotties Prove Best in Show, Prance Past Pioneers 78-17
Macon, GA (Feb. 2, 2008) – The Wesleyan College Basketball Team completed the first leg of its most grueling portion of the schedule, losing 78-17 at home to Agnes Scott College Saturday afternoon. The game marked the start of a busy stretch in which they will play four games over an eight-day span.
The Scotties (12-7, 5-2 GSAC) used a 21-2 run midway through the first half to gain control of the game. Balanced scoring and dominance on the boards helped Agnes Scott to victory. Five Scotties scored in double figures while the team out-rebounded the Pioneers 50-24 overall including a 20-4 edge on the offensive glass.
Sophomore Crystal Church led the Pioneers (0-13, 0-6 GSAC) with six points, four rebounds and three assists while playing a game-high 40 minutes. Wesleyan’s leading scorer and rebounder, Andrea Moses was limited to just six minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. Moses finished with four points and seven rebounds.
Pioneers Attacked by Lions 111-17
Macon, GA (Jan. 29, 2008) – The Pioneers opened a stretch of eight consecutive conference games on Tuesday evening falling at conference power Piedmont College 111-17. The Lions remain undefeated in Great South Athletic Conference play at 5-0.
Junior Davida Dwyer led the Pioneers with 11 points, seven rebounds in 29 minutes. Wesleyan traveled without starters Andrea Moses, Natalia Fuller-Reed and reserve Phina Chatman.
Wesleyan (0-11, 0-5 GSAC) will host conference rival Agnes Scott Sat. Feb. 2 (tip-off 2 p.m.).
Pioneers Fall at Home to Bennett 76-32
Macon, GA (Jan. 25, 2008) – The Pioneers lost a hard-fought basketball game 76-32 to Bennett College Friday evening at Porter Gymnasium. The game featured a match-up of strong inside players, freshman Andrea Moses for the Pioneers and Asia Smith for Bennett. Both players were impressive leading their respective teams from start to finish. Moses led the Pioneers with 16 points and nine rebounds in 32 minutes while Smith led all scorers with 20 points nine rebounds in 28 minutes. Smith was 10-15 from the field.
Pioneers Basketball Lose to Huntingdon College 92-20
Macon, GA (Jan. 23, 2008) – The Wesleyan College Basketball Team lost to visiting Huntingdon College 92-20 Wednesday evening at Porter Gymnasium. Wesleyan (0-10, 0-4 GSAC) sophomore guard Crystal Church led the Pioneers doing a bit of everything, with seven points, six rebounds, three assists and one steal in a team-high 40 minutes. Freshman Andrea Moses added eight points and 13 rebounds, but also had 10 turnovers. The Lady Hawks (9-7, 4-1 GSAC) pulled away early led by freshman Kirsten Kline’s eight first half points. Huntingdon closed out the half leading 48-12 while shooting an impressive 38.5 %. Although the Pioneers played with a great deal of energy at both ends of the floor, the team was unable to overcome poor shooting (5-64 from the field).
Pioneers Basketball Set for Two Games in Three Days
Macon, GA (Jan. 23, 2008) – The Wesleyan College Basketball Team hosts the first of two home games this week, beginning Wednesday, welcoming conference opponent Huntingdon College (tip-off 7 p.m.).
The Pioneers (0-9, 0-3 GSAC) are coming off a road loss to Spelman College, while the Lady Hawks (8-7, 3-1 GSAC) will look to rebound from a tough loss at first-place Piedmont College. The Pioneers will continue to rely heavily on freshman Andrea Moses’ strong contributions. She leads the team in points (9.4), rebounds (8.4), blocks (.78) and field goal percentage (.342) and is fourth in minutes played at just over 29 minutes per game. She ranks in the top-ten in the GSAC in rebounds (fourth) and blocks (ninth).
Since joining the team in January, Junior Davida Dwyer has given Pioneer head coach Jason Henry another scoring threat and rebounding presence. In three games, Dwyer has averaged 10.6 points and eight rebounds. Huntingdon’s frontline tandem of senior Patsy Slater and junior Dusty Doss are an imposing force for the Lady Hawks. Slater leads the team in scoring at 11.4 per game and is second in rebounding at 6.9 per game. She ranks seventh in the conference in scoring and ninth in rebounding. Doss chips in 9.5 points per game and leads the team with 7.9 rebounds and two blocks per game. She ranks 11th in the conference in scoring, seventh in rebounding, ninth in steals (1.71) and is number-one in blocks (2.0).
Pioneers Fall at Home 102-28 to LaGrange College
Macon, GA (Jan. 17, 2008) – The Wesleyan College Basketball Team fell at home Thursday evening to GSAC opponent LaGrange College 102-28. The Panthers (6-8, 2-2 GSAC) used a 14-2 run midway through the first half to increase its lead to 36-12. Led by senior Jessica Barba’s 15 points and seven rebounds, the Panthers held a 51-20 halftime advantage. Barba finished the game with 23 points and eight rebounds.
Wesleyan junior Davida Dwyer’s eight points and five rebounds and freshman Andrea Moses’ six points and four rebounds helped keep the Pioneers within striking distance in the first half. The Panthers opened the second half strong using a 26-0 run over an 11-minute span to finish off the Pioneers. Panthers Junior forward Jessica Boler scored 23 of her team-high 27 points in the half, while pulling down 10 rebounds. Dwyer, playing much of the second half in foul trouble, finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Pioneers Basketball Team Fresh Off Break Travels to Free Will Baptist College
Macon, GA (Jan. 7, 2008) – The Pioneer Basketball Team hit the road today for a match against Free Will Baptist College (tip-off 4 p.m. CST). After nearly a month off, the Pioneers (0-6) returned to the court this weekend in preparation for a busy week of games, which begins tonight against the Lady Flames in Nashville. The team will than travel to Winston Salem, N.C. to compete in the Piedmont Classic this weekend.
Pioneers Basketball Drop Back-to-Back Games
Macon, GA (Dec, 2, 2007) – The Wesleyan College Basketball Team lost two games over the weekend dropping to 0-5. The Pioneers hung tough in the early stages of the first half Saturday against Peace College before the Pacers pulled away winning 84-19. With the score tied at 8-8 with 14 minutes remaining, the Pacers used a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to gain control of the game. First-year guard Chelsie Dunn led the Pioneers with 12 points, five rebounds in 27 minutes.
On Sunday, Wesleyan opened the Great South Athletic Conference play hosting power Maryville College. The Scots jumped out to an early 20-0 lead and never looked back. Led by Jeanna Dalton’s 14 first half points, the Scots cruised to a 55-10 halftime lead and defeated the Pioneers 98-23. Dunn led the Pioneers with 15 points and four rebounds.
Lady Eagles Fly Past Pioneers 95-28
Macon, GA (Nov. 20, 2007) – The Wesleyan College Basketball Team fell at home 95-28 to the Toccoa Falls Lady Eagles. The Pioneers (0-2) were led by freshman guard Chelsie Dunn’s 14 points and four assists in 29 minutes. As a team the Pioneers shot just 25 percent from the field. Midway through the first half with the score tied at 11 the Lady Eagles grabbed control of the game with a 30-2 run. Toccoa Falls closed out the first half leading 45-16. The Lady Eagles (5-1) capitalized with 43 points off 35 Pioneer turnovers. Junior Dyanna Cannon led four Eagles in double figures with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Pioneers Basketball Team Falls in Season Opener
Macon, GA (Nov. 17, 2007) – The Wesleyan College Basketball Team kicked off its 2007 season falling at home to Piedmont Baptist College 89-30. Led by first-year forward Andrea Moses’ 14 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with three minutes remaining in the game, the Pioneers played with great energy throughout. Piedmonts hot shooting and second chance points proved to be the difference in the game. The Conquerors shot 46 percent overall including six of 12 from behind the arc. They also held an 11-2 edge in second chance points 11-2.
“If we played the entire game the way we played the last 15 minutes I really believe with a few more games under our belt we’d have had a chance to win the game,” said Pioneers Head Coach Jason Henry. The Conquerors were led by Katie Mullens 22 points and 11 rebounds in 25 minutes.
