Dr. Lynn Lamberton Long '70
|
Distinguished Achievement in a Profession
When Lynn Lamberton Long graduated from Wesleyan in 1970 with a degree in Spanish education, she might not have anticipated that her 40th class reunion also would be a celebration of her distinguished career as a family therapist and educator. After Wesleyan, Lynn earned her master’s degree from Rollins College (receiving their Outstanding Alumni Award in 1989), an Ed.S., and her Ph.D. in counselor education from the University of Florida. She has served as a family therapist for various counseling centers and in private practice and has taught counseling and therapy classes at the University of Florida, Rollins College, and Stetson University. Today, she has her own private practice as a licensed marriage and family therapist, specializing in families of divorce and families of incest. She retires this year as chair of the graduate department of counselor education at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, a position she has held since 1989, but Lynn will continue in the role of an advisory board member for that department.
Internationally acclaimed in her field, Lynn has presented papers to professional groups worldwide on topics related to Couples and Sexuality and Couples Counseling. She has spoken at international counseling conferences in Shang Hai, China; Sonthofen, Germany; San Jose, Costa Rica; and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Lynn has developed therapeutic models for both incestuous families and couples. The couples model has been used in many colleges and universities for teaching graduate students of counseling. She also presented a model to the Confederation of Social Workers for all of the Russian Federation in St. Petersburg, Russia. The presentation centered on training philosophies and practices of marriage and family therapy. Her impressive list of publications includes Counseling and Therapy for Couples (2006), now in its second edition, Sexuality Counseling for Couples: An Integrative Approach (2006), and Counseling and Therapy for Couples (1998).
Lynn has more than 50,000 hours of counseling for individuals, families, and groups on a variety of topics including stress, depression, divorce, premarital issues, career development, incest, eating disorders, and child behavioral problems. She has served locally, nationally and internationally as an expert witness and consultant to the judicial and legal system on child abuse and child custody issues.
Within her community, Lynn serves on her church’s altar guild, presents couples workshops to numerous organizations, and participates on the board of a local women’s club. In addition, she has been instrumental in funding a marriage and family training center at the House Next Door Family Counseling Center in DeLand, and has served on their board of directors.
As she awaits the arrival of her first grandchild, however, Lynn considers being mother to her two sons, now ages 34 and 36, her greatest achievement and contribution to the world. In her semiretirement she intends to enjoy traveling, playing tennis and bridge, and continuing to serve the professional community and local community as she’s done most of her adult life.
Lynn is indeed a model of professional dedication and accomplishment. And so, for a lifetime of significant contributions to the field of counseling and therapy and for excelling in all domains of her life, including her roles as friend and mother, the Wesleyan College Alumnae Association presents the Alumnae Award for Distinguished Achievement in a Profession to Lynn Lamberton Long, Class of 1970. |
