Betty Lo ’95
Content Manager
A.B. International Business, Wesleyan College
Senior Manager of Communications and Knowledge Management
The McDonald’s Division of The Coca-Cola Company

She started out as a music major with a concentration in piano and voice, later switched to art history before "Dr. (Glenna) Dod and I put our heads together," says Lo, referring to Wesleyan’s D. Abbott Turner Professor of Free Enterprise. "She helped me create my major in international business. Actually, that was the basis of the international business degree Wesleyan offers today."

The multi-talented Lo moved with her parents to Houston, Texas, from her native Taiwan as a nine-year-old. When the time came for her to decide on a college her piano teacher and next-door neighbor, who had attended Wesleyan, suggested she apply for a music scholarship at the college. It was while spending scholarship weekend at Wesleyan, that Lo decided that’s where she wanted to be.

"The women I met that weekend were all smart and dedicated to getting an education instead of partying," says Lo, a Golden Heart. "And the Southern hospitality everyone demonstrated was wonderful. I had actually narrowed my choices to Duke, the University of Texas, and Wesleyan. But when I got the music scholarship and compared the type of education I would get at each of the schools, I thought Wesleyan was definitely a better deal."

During her years at Wesleyan, Lo was a member of Mortar Board, the Honor Society, Wesleyan Choir, Alpha Kappa Psi, the Student Government Association, among others, and participated in STUNT, Color Rush and numerous other activities. She also spent one semester studying in Bulgaria, something recommended by her favorite professor, Dr. Dod.

"I took a lot of classes with Dr. Dod -– she is a great professor," Lo says. "I loved the way she always tried to integrate real business situations and cases into her classes."

Lo says she owes Dod and her other Wesleyan professors a debt of gratitude. "The liberal arts education I got at Wesleyan has enabled me to understand all the various aspects of the business world," Lo says. "And the value of an all-women’s college education, being in a classroom where the focus is on the needs of women, has benefited me in my working environment and helped me in my career."
