Anna Deckert’s hometown is Fort Walton Beach, Florida, but after spending four years at Wesleyan College, she is now studying in Madrid, Spain. Anna graduated from Wesleyan College in 2005 with her B.A. in International Business and Spanish and then began pursuing her master’s degree overseas.
Anna enjoyed the small campus and especially the small class size. For her, it was a comfortable learning environment which made for wonderful experiences with her professors and enjoying every class she took.
“If I could tell a prospective student something about Wesleyan, it would be that if you are interested in having a good relationship with professors and living in a small campus environment, then Wesleyan is a good choice for you,” says Anna. Her Wesleyan experience gave her the opportunity to travel to Spain to study. As a junior she studied abroad to London for semester. That experience gave her the confidence necessary to decide to leave the U.S. for a longer period of time while studying for her master’s degree in Spanish.
“Upon arriving at graduate school, I found that I was surrounded by students in their 30’s and felt a bit overwhelmed at the thought that I was the youngest and, possibly, least prepared,” says Anna. “I discovered, however, that my preparation at Wesleyan was more than adequate and once classes started I realized that Wesleyan had been a wonderful place to start my academic career.”
Although Anna says that she really enjoyed her time at Wesleyan and will always remember it fondly, she did learn a few life lessons. She wishes that she had known that it would have been a good idea to get involved early on with more campus organizations. Anna remembered that she was not terribly involved during her first two years and at the end she realized that it was hard to get involved so late. For now, Anna is focused on a December graduation date with her master’s program. She knows she wants to live and work outside of the U.S., maybe following a career in the business or international relations field. Anna is another Wesleyan Woman pioneering her way around the world. |
