According to Tamara Francis of Tallahassee, Florida, Wesleyan College offers great opportunities for students including exposure to influential and pioneering women. Through courses and lectures, she was enlightened about many domestic and global issues that impact women everyday.
“I cannot say enough about the small college experience. One thing I realize now is how much I was held accountable for my education,” said the 2005 graduate. “Wesleyan's small classes and seminar-style teaching techniques made me a participant in my learning experience, as opposed to just a passive recipient.”
Tamara believes that few schools offer students the opportunity to work closely with premier scholars, and even fewer offer the flexibility to explore different academic interests. But at Wesleyan, accessible faculty and flexibility are commonplace. Students are challenged, but always have the support of the faculty.
“The discussions we had on topics or books in my English courses before the teacher entered the classroom are some of my favorite experiences from college,” said Tamara. “If students are empowered to begin class without the teacher, then something is RIGHT.”
This English major and theatre minor loved late night play rehearsals, work at the Writing Center, and all-night study sessions at the Waffle House. All three prepared her for graduate school at Florida State University. Currently, she's studying for her master’s degree in rhetoric and English composition.
“The classroom structure at Wesleyan mirrors the setup at grad school,” Tamara said. “I think that my undergrad experience really developed my self confidence and my ability to speak up in the classroom -- an environment that requires a very public display of knowledge.”
Although Tamara originally thought that her future would lie in academia, she might be changing her career plans. When she's not in the classroom, Tamara is working in financial support services with Florida's Division of Emergency Management. “I enjoy helping people and my current job helps me do that in an immediate way. I'd like my future career plans to take me more in that direction," she said.
Making the jump from the stage to English to financial services is standard business with a liberal arts education. Tamara credits Wesleyan for giving her the opportunity to try out (and appreciate) a wide variety of subjects and for providing her with an education that stressed individual responsibility and teamwork. For now, her future plans include finishing graduate school, getting a job, and traveling more. Equipped with a Wesleyan liberal arts education, Tamara has a strong foundation to pursue any of the many diverse career paths that may come her way. |
